Blog Post 1: Educational Technology Diagnostic Assessment

Hello and welcome to my blog! My name is Alisha Saadat and I am in my third year of B.Ed with a minor in Science. I am excited to learn effective and impactful ways to utilize technology not only in my practicum placement but throughout my teaching career!

  • Previous experience with AI applications e.g., ChatGPT) and how you have used them (e.g., writing assignments)?
    • I have recently been working and trying to understand how much AI can do. Writing essays, creating an image, aiding in editing, or constructing lesson plans and rubrics, AI can help in many ways. In my second year, creating a fresh rubric from scratch was difficult for me. When I had no other option, I used ChatGPT to help me build a rubric that was vague enough that I could edit it to tailor my end goal better. But if ChatGPT hadn't given me that little piece of assistance, I never could have finished it.
  • Educational technology being used in your 3rd year practicum placement?
    • In my practicum placement, I noticed that teachers all have a school-provided laptop as well as a smartboard in their classrooms. Annie Foote also has a few laptop carts and an iPad cart for the students to use. My mentor teacher is also very fond of her document camera which she uses quite often. Another piece of technology that Annie Foote uses is the library a scanning system, however, with how finicky technology is, for the first week of school the system was not working and only started working the week I was there.
  • Whatburningquestion do you have about the use of digital technologies in K to 9 education?
    • A question that is important to me is how do I utilize technology in a way that is both effective and impactful for my students, without relying on it too much.
  • Why is the question important to YOU?
    • Technology is big within our world today and with it constantly expanding, we are slowly losing touch with ourselves and the world around us. This is why I do want my students to be able to use technology and be familiar with it, however, I do not believe that relying on technology too much is also a big issue and should not be taught within the classroom. I am also an avid technology user and guilty of relying on it too much, so this is why I want to know how to stop it.

  1. Hello Alisha! I hope you are well. I loved your openness about learning to what extent we can use AI in the classroom and how we can utilize AI in our own educational journeys. I love that you brought up the issue of reliance on technology. Technology is a fantastic aid for us educators. However, we still must maintain the ability to research and learn through teaching rather than just going with the first Google search result. Enjoy your week, I can't wait to see what you post in the future!
